Reuters: U.S. says wind could power 20 percent of eastern grid

Posted On: 2-05-2010

The Reuters web site cites a government report claiming wind energy could generate 20 percent of the electricity needed by households and businesses in the eastern half of the United States by 2024, but it would require up to $90 billion in investment. According to Michael Pope, Green Committee Chairman, wind power projects are not generally seen as having a direct impact on EGSA member companies. However, adds Pope, many of the larger wind projects maintain On-Site Power systems in order to provide support and meet requirements when the wind dies. One generator set manufacturer has close to 500MW installed, under construction or under contract negotiations in the U.S. alone for this type of power plant. Smaller scale On-Site Power systems can also play a role as part of smaller wind projects.
