EGSA Members Recognized for Service to the Industry

Several members of the Electrical Generating Systems Association (EGSA) were singled out at the recent EGSA Annual Spring Convention in Bernalillo, NM and recognized for outstanding contributions to EGSA and the entire On-Site Power industry.

2008 EGSA President Warner Bauer presented Ron Hartzel of Eaton Corporation with the William Timmler Award. The William Timmler Award is given annually to an individual EGSA member for outstanding work in chairing an EGSA committee.
Hartzel has been involved in EGSA for many years and among his contributions to EGSA has been his outstanding service to the Codes and Standards Surveillance Committee and his leadership of the Electronic Media Committee. “Thanks to his eye for detail and his commitment to the task at hand,” said Bauer, “EGSA can boast that its recently re-launched web site is one of the most authoritative, informative and useful sites on the internet today.” Hartzel has served on the EGSA Board of Directors and is currently EGSA’s Vice President.

Mr. Bauer also recognized Dale Slemp of Western Power Group, Inc. with the Leroy H. Carpenter Award. The Leroy H. Carpenter award is given to an individual EGSA member for long and outstanding service to the Association. Mr. Slemp has been involved in EGSA for over 30 years. Among his many contributions to EGSA over the past three decades is his service as Membership Chairman, for which he received The William Timmler award in 1986. He served on the EGSA Board of Directors in the 1980s, again in the 90’s and most recently when he was elected to the Executive Committee in 2003 and, finally, served as EGSA President in 2006.

Mr. Bauer went on to recognize a select group of On-Site Power School Instructors whose hard work and commitment over the years have helped educate EGSA members and the On-Site Power industry. Recently, the EGSA Board of Directors established an Instructor Appreciation Program for the purpose of recognizing the contributions of instructors—and their employers—who have devoted significant time and effort to the school, and who have taught in the school for at least five years. Five instructors were recognized for their contribution as an EGSA school instructor for at least 5 years. They were:
  • James Wright of Marathon Electric, 25 years of service;
  • Tim Hinde, Woodward Industrial Controls, 10 years of service;
  • Dennis Roundtree, Onsite Power Inc., 10 years of service;
  • Terry Gaines, Basler Electric, 5 years of service;
  • Steve Lawrence, Woodward Governor Controls, 5 years of service;
  • Dave Alley, ANNA, Inc., 10 years of service;
  • Ole Haaland, ANNA, Inc., 10 years of service.

Mr. Bauer also presented Terry Gaines, Basler Electric, with the James Wright Educator Award. Named in honor of James Wright, the award is given on an as-needed basis to honor those individuals who have devoted their energies to the betterment of the Association’s education programs. Gaines hasbeen an EGSA On-Site Power School instructor for 5 years and now teaches the Automatic Voltage Regulator modules in both the Basic and Advanced Schools and the Generator Protection module in the Advanced School. He consistently is ranked by students attending the schools above 4 on a 5-point scale.

Finally, Mr. Bauer presented 2007 EGSA President Gary Kidwell with a plaque and portrait recognizing “his dedication and service to the Association as EGSA President in 2007,” said Bauer.

The Deadline for 2008 David I. Coren Scholarship Applications is May 1, 2008

Students have until May 1, 2008 to submit their applications for the David I. Coren Memorial Scholarship Awards for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Established, sponsored and administered by the Electrical Generating Systems Association (EGSA), the David I. Coren Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to qualified students and is designed to have a positive impact on personnel shortages in our industry and is an excellent vehicle for enhancing awareness of the industry.
The Association hopes to award ten $2,000 scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. The competitive, merit-based scholarships are awarded to qualified students who plan on pursuing a career in the On-Site Power industry. In addition to their career focus, applicants must be full-time students, have a declared major related to On-Site Power, and maintain a minimum 2.8 GPA.
EGSA launched the David I. Coren Scholarship Program in 2002 to promote awareness of the On-Site Power Generation industry and to generate interest in On-Site Power careers. The move came in response to the growing need for skilled On-Site Power personnel. While the Association has an established and widely recognized On-Site Power School education program of its own, the Board of Directors noted the industry’s need for individuals with higher educations from a variety of applicable disciplines. Since its launch, the Program has distributed $86,000 to a total of 43 students.
Information detailing the David I. Coren Memorial Scholarship program—including a Scholarship Program Brochure and an Application Packet—is available at www.egsa.org. For additional information, individuals may contact George Rowley, EGSA Director of Education, by e-mail at G.Rowley@EGSA.org or by phone at 561-237-5557.

EGSA Launches Two-Tiered On-Site Power Schools

The Electrical Generating Systems Association (EGSA) has recently launched and published details on its new Two-Tiered On-Site Power Generation School program. The new Basic and Advanced Schools are designed to better meet the needs and diverse backgrounds of those who attend the schools. The result is a more pertinent training experience in fewer days—that means fewer hotel dollars spent, and fewer days away from the workplace.
EGSA's On-Site Power Generation Schools provide a complete overview of the components of an On-Site Power generation system. The program provides students with a unique opportunity to familiarize themselves with the technical aspects of the On-Site Power Generation Industry.
Basic SchoolThe Basic School is a general, but still technical, overview of On-Site Power Generation equipment. The Basic School is designed for those who are working in non-technical positions (such as Sales or Marketing, Administrative, or Company Management positions) and for those with less than three years experience working in the industry. As a result, we have "lightened up" several modules to make them more suitable for less experienced or non-technical personnel.
Advanced School—In comparison to the Basic School, the Advanced School will offer more highly technical and in-depth coverage of the equipment. The Advanced School is designed for those who have attended the EGSA Basic On-Site Power Generation School; those who are employed in Engineering, Project Management, or Service positions; and for those with over three years experience in the industry. The Advanced School features "beefed up" modules and covers technical aspects in a more in-depth manner and offers three new modules—Starting Systems, Emissions, and Noise Control.
Complete details about the Schools—including module descriptions, school schedule and registration information—is available online at www.EGSA.org.
EGSA is an international trade association made up of over 600 companies throughout the United States and a dozen other countries. Headquartered in Boca Raton, FL it is the world's largest organization dedicated to On-Site Power Generation and works to provide a variety of educational opportunities to members of the industry.

EGSA On-Site Power Pavilion at POWER-GEN International 2008 Sold Out!

The Electrical Generating Systems Association (EGSA) has announced that the On-Site Power Pavilion at the POWER-GEN International 2008 show is completely sold out. Firms interested in exhibiting might still contact the association regarding exhibit space, in the event of cancellations.

POWER-GEN International 2008—to be held December 2-4 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL—will feature more than 1,100 companies exhibiting the latest in innovative products for the power generation industry, including boilers, turbines, engines, computer hardware and software, controls and instrumentation systems, generators, electrical systems, pumps, valves and much more.

And while POWER-GEN covers every size and type of power generation, the EGSA Pavilion — "a show within a show"—focuses exclusively on On-Site Power Generation and related products and services. It is the largest single gathering of such companies annually. The On-Site Power Pavilion will feature over 100 exhibiting companies and will be prominently located at the show.

In addition to the Pavilion, EGSA will also host the On-Site Power Reception, a two-hour, get-acquainted cocktail party for members and non-members of the Association. The get together provides a further opportunity for exhibitors and show attendees from the On-Site Power Industry to meet and talk away from the show floor.

According to Jalane Kellough, Executive Director of EGSA, "The POWER-GEN International Show, and the On-Site Power Pavilion within it, offer EGSA members and industry professionals a unique opportunity to become familiar with the latest advances in On-Site Power technology, learn about new innovative products, and make important business contacts. I urge anyone attending the show who is involved with the On-Site Power Industry to come and visit the On-Site Power Pavilion. This year’s pavilion will be the best yet!"
