The U.S. Military wants to lighten the load soldiers carry by reducing the size and weight of batteries they carry to power necessary high-tech gear. As a result, the Military is offering a $1 million prize to the individual or team who can do so.

In a move reminiscent of the X Prize, internet powerhouse Google is giving away millions to underwrite efforts to move plug-in hybrid autos to market faster.
